The staff of the Badger Associations Low Vision Services can help you gain an understanding of your eye condition and learn how to make the most of your remaining vision. When vision problems can no longer be helped by conventional eyeglasses, medication or even surgery, doctors refer their patients to our certified occupational therapist/low vision therapist and low vision optometrist.
With a referral from a healthcare provider, individuals meet for one-on-one consultations with our Low Vision Services staff to ensure they get the training and/or adaptive equipment they need to help them maintain their independence despite a loss of vision.
Our Certified Low Vision Therapist will introduce you to tools and techniques available to help you make the most of your remaining vision. This process may involve assessments for lighting, optical aids, contrast and glare control. Most importantly, you will be provided with instruction on specific techniques that allow you to make the most of your remaining vision. Sessions may be customized differently for each person based upon your goals, the nature of your visual impairment and records from your eye doctor.
Because you may experience fluctuations in your vision that do not occur in our office, we will loan you appropriate equipment to evaluate outside of our office setting. Between your sessions, you will be encouraged to practice daily using the equipment loaned to you. This procedure will give you the chance to monitor not just the equipment, but your ability to use the new techniques in different settings.
In order to provide the most effective service, we recommend a minimum of three sessions. Sessions normally last about 50 minutes and ideally, they will be scheduled about a week apart. You are encouraged to bring a friend or family member to serve as your coach it is in your best interest to have the same person with you at all your appointments.
Please bring your prescription glasses (whether or not youre using them), sunglasses, and any magnifiers and lamps you have used within the last year.
