Learning Life Skills through the Badger Association’s Recreational Services Program
The Badger Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired offers recreational opportunities through two models, the STEP and LEAP classes.
The first component, the Structured Training Education Program, (STEP) assists people who are blind or visually impaired to continue hobbies and leisure time activities through the use of adaptive techniques which will allow them to be as independent as possible. These skills will be presented by specialists in vision rehabilitation and therapists in occupational, physical, and recreation therapies. STEP courses are carefully designed with specific, clearly-defined, measurable goals and objectives. Class length will vary from four to eight weeks. After completing STEP courses, participants will have the skills to pursue hobbies and recreational activities in their home communities and/or participate in other recreation programming at the Badger Association.
Leisure Enrichment Activities Program (LEAP) classes make up the second component of recreational services courses. They are directed by the Badger Association's membership and will be offered from September 11, 2006 through August 2007. Participants may enroll in as many of the 12 LEAP courses as they choose. The annual LEAP class fee is $80 for nonmembers or $60 for Badger Association members. This fee may be paid in three monthly installments. Alternatively, participants may pay $10 a month. Guest LEAP Day Passes are available for $2.
