Adaptive Computer Classes

The Badger Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired provides computer and keyboard classes in our technology lab. Most computer classes have the prerequisite of competence with touch-typing and knowledge of the entire computer keyboard. Take careful note of the specific prerequisites for each class as well. Limited space is available for these classes, so early registration is recommended. Please register for all computer and keyboard classes with Troy Hergert at 414-615-0122. Payment for each class is to be given to the instructor the first day of class.

Beginning Level

Learn the Keyboard

August 4 – 28, Monday - Thursday
12:30 to 2:00 p.m.; Cost $50
Instructor: Mary LaPointe

Learn to touch type without the use of sight by locating all areas of the computer keyboard by touch. This course teaches the skill of keyboarding which is essential for a blind or visually impaired person to operate a computer and is also required for all other computer courses.

Introduction to Windows and Word

August 4 - 21, Monday - Thursday
2:30 to 4:00 p.m.; Cost $40

Learn the basics of Windows and word processing by way of screen reading or magnifying software such as JAWS, Zoomtext, Window-eyes or System Access. Prerequisite: Keyboarding.

System Access Mobile Network

July 7 - 17, Monday – Thursday
2:30 to 4:00 p.m.; Cost $40

If the cost of high-end screen readers and scanning programs is keeping an accessible computer out of your reach, then you will want to learn about this excellent alternative. For a fraction of the cost of other programs, you can have a screen reader in Windows and popular applications, e-mail and Internet access, and the ability to scan and read print material. It is also much easier to use than the high-end products. A screen magnifier has recently been added to this product and most of its features can now be accessed for free by using the satogo.com web site. Prerequisite: Keyboarding.

Introduction to Excel

July 14 – August 18, Mondays
6:30 – 8:00 p.m.; Cost $30

Learn the basics of reading, navigating, editing and formatting spreadsheets with a screen reader or screen magnifier. Prerequisites: keyboarding, experience with a screen reader or magnifier.

The World Wide Web and E-mail

September 8 – 18, Monday – Thursday
2:30 to 4:00 p.m.; Cost $40
Instructor: Rose Fortney

Navigate the World Wide Web and Outlook Express with a screen reader or magnifier. Prerequisites: Keyboarding, Introduction to Windows or thorough knowledge of Windows and a screen reader or magnifier.

E-mail with Outlook Express

July 16 – August 20, Wednesdays
6:30 – 8:00 p.m.; Cost $25
Instructor: Mary LaPointe

Learn to manage e-mail, contacts and attachments in Outlook Express with a screen reader or magnifier. Prerequisites: Keyboarding, experience with a screen reader or magnifier.

Advanced Level

Peapod Shopping on the Web

July 14 – 24, Mondays and Thursdays
4:30 to 6:00 p.m.; Cost $20
Instructor: Caroline Congdon

Getting assistance in a grocery store with identifying brands, sizes, and preparation instructions on products can be a challenge. Learn to shop from the comfort of your home with the confidence of knowing that you've gotten exactly what you want from the store. Prerequisites: Keyboarding, experience with a screen reader or magnifier, and the ability to browse the Internet.

Advanced Kurzweil 1000

July 8 – 17, Tuesdays and Thursdays
5:30 to 7:00 p.m.; Cost $20
Instructor: Howard Kaufman

Explore many of the features of this scanning program. Topics included: customizing the program, creating accurate scans of printed material, making and using bookmarks, creating audio files, downloading to a portable device, downloading books, magazines, and accessing PDFs.

Advanced Google

August 4 – 21, Mondays and Thursdays
4:30 – 6:00 p.m.; Cost $30
Instructor: Caroline Congdon

Google has become one of the most popular search engines on the Internet, but it's much more. Learn to fully utilize Google and its many features like translating words into different languages, converting weights and measures, and more. Prerequisites: Keyboarding, experience with a screen reader or magnifier, and basic Internet skills.

CD’s and Goldwave Software

August 5 – 14, Tuesdays and Thursdays
5:30 – 7:00 p.m.; Cost $20
Instructor: Howard Kaufman

Learn to use Goldwave to record music and voice. Then learn to copy music from CDs as well as making your own CDs. Prerequisite: Keyboarding, experience with a screen reader or magnifier, and knowledge of windows menus and dialog boxes.

Computer Maintenance

September 2 - 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays
5:30 to 7:00 p.m.; Cost $20
Instructor: Howard Kaufman

Keep your computer running safely and efficiently. The Internet provides wonderful things, but it also provides some harmful things as well. Learn to protect programs and information from loss or damage. Prerequisites: Keyboard competence, knowledge of Windows concepts and of screen readers or screen magnifiers.

Advanced MS Word

September 8 – 18, Mondays and Thursdays
4:30 – 6:00 p.m.; Cost $20

Learn to work with document formatting and mail merges. Prerequisites: Keyboarding, experience with concepts of file management, text navigation and experience with a screen reader in the Windows environment.

Monday Night on the Web

These 90 minute sessions will take you through a different web site or topic. Cost: each session is $10. Please sign up for each session separately. Instructor: Mary LaPointe Prerequisites: Keyboarding, experience navigating the web with a screen reader or magnifier.

Downloading Music

September 8, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Use the WalMart Music Download site to download your favorite song or album. Discover tips to navigate and fill out forms.

September 22, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Learn useful tips for searching for books and music and filling out the forms on Amazon’s accessible web site.
